The brief was to create a primary bedroom that felt calm, comfortable and elevated, with a more finished and intentional look.

The room needed to feel restful, but not plain. Stylish, but still warm. The aim was to create a bedroom that felt like a retreat — somewhere to switch off, unwind and enjoy at the end of the day.

The design focused on creating atmosphere through colour, texture, lighting and carefully layered details.

The scheme centred around a soft green palette, chosen to bring depth and warmth without making the room feel dark or heavy.

A panelled feature wall was introduced behind the bed to create structure, architectural interest and a strong focal point within the room. This helped frame the bed beautifully and gave the space a more bespoke, designed feel.

The upholstered headboard adds softness and comfort, while the layered cushions, throws and bedding bring texture and warmth. Natural timber furniture, warm metallic details, plants, books and carefully chosen accessories complete the space and give it a relaxed, lived-in elegance.

Lighting was an important part of the overall feel. The bedside lamps, candlelight and reflective details help create a softer evening atmosphere, making the room feel calm, cosy and inviting.

This bedroom works because every element has been considered.

The green panelled wall adds depth and character, while the upholstered headboard and soft textiles balance it with warmth and comfort. The timber bedside tables and dressing table bring a natural, Scandinavian-inspired feel, while the mirror helps reflect light and create a greater sense of space.

The styling details are subtle but important. Books, candles, plants, soft textures and layered accessories help the room feel finished without feeling overdone.

The final result is a calm and elegant primary bedroom that feels personal, restful and beautifully designed.

This guest bedroom and home office at Joseph Terry Grove in York was designed to make better use of a bright, light-filled room within a two-storey townhouse.

The brief was to create a space that could work beautifully as both a practical home office and a welcoming guest bedroom — without feeling like one function had been compromised for the other.

As a York interior designer, my role was to create a room that felt calm, useful, cohesive and beautifully finished, with a strong focus on flexible living, clever storage and considered detailing.

The clients wanted a room that could serve more than one purpose.

Like many homes, this space needed to work hard. It needed to function as a comfortable home office for everyday use, while still feeling considered and inviting when used as a guest bedroom.

The aim was to create a room that felt practical, but not purely functional. It needed storage, desk space and good lighting, but it also needed warmth, texture and personality.

The wider home is a two-storey townhouse with lots of natural light, so the design needed to feel connected to the rest of the property while giving this room its own identity.

The design centred around a rich blue-green colour palette, paired with warm timber tones and lighter textured details to create contrast and depth.

Bespoke fitted storage was introduced to maximise the room’s functionality, helping to keep the space calm and organised. The wardrobe doors include textured inset panels, adding subtle detail and preventing the storage from feeling too heavy.

The home office area was designed with a wraparound desk, open shelving and integrated lighting to create a workspace that feels both practical and beautifully styled. The shelving allows for books, accessories and decorative details, giving the room personality without cluttering the main work surface.

Warm timber surfaces balance the deeper wall colour, while plants, framed artwork, ceramics and softer styling elements help to make the room feel inviting rather than corporate.

The result is a flexible room that feels useful, polished and personal — a home office that can support everyday life, but still feel welcoming as part of the home.

This room works because it has been designed around real life.

Instead of treating the home office and guest bedroom as two separate problems, the design brings both functions together in one cohesive scheme.

The fitted storage creates order. The wraparound desk makes the most of the available space. The open shelving adds display and personality. The darker colour palette gives the room atmosphere, while the timber, textured panels and styling details keep it warm and balanced.

It is practical, but not plain. It is functional, but still beautiful.

That is where good interior design makes the difference — creating rooms that work harder without losing their sense of style.
